Read for Empathy!

Living Different Lives Through Books!

Reading books is a GREAT way to help children learn about empathy. Reading about real or imaginary characters enables children to imagine living different lives and experience others’ emotions.

I’m working with Empathy Lab to help promote Empathy Education in schools and at events.

What is Empathy?

Having empathy is when we can put ourselves in someone else’s shoes and understand how they are feeling.

When we read, we see the world from the characters’ point of view.

Empathy Day!

Empathy Day is an annual event that focuses on using books – and talking about them – to build an understanding of the importance and practice of empathy. I’m working with Empathy Lab to help celebrate Empathy Day and promote all the great work they do!

Understanding How our Actions Affect Others

Discussing situations in books gives children a safe space to discover and learn about different emotions. This can help them think about how they are affected by other people’s actions - and how their own actions impact on the people around them.

Learning about empathy can help children make better choices in how they behave.

This is an essential skill when it comes to creating a balanced, tolerant and understanding society where everyone is valued and cared for.

Free Empathy Resources

Discussing relationships, situations and behaviours found in stories helps children deal with difficult or challenging behaviour in real life. Understanding why people behave in certain ways can help us develop tolerance and helps us react in kinder ways to others who may be struggling. And learning about other people’s lives helps us value our differences and appreciate our similarities.

I’ve created a FREE Empathy Resource Pack to help you focus on empathy learning. See below!

Empathy Lab - Great Resources for Teachers, Parents & Carers!

“EmpathyLab is the first organisation to build children's empathy, literacy and social activism through a systematic use of high-quality literature. Our strategy builds on new scientific evidence showing the power of reading to build real-life empathy skills.  We believe that empathy is a beacon of hope in a divided world.
